Dark Souls 2 beginner's guide: how to stay alive (longer)

Jun 15, 2013  For Dark Souls II on the PlayStation 3, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'No one is concerned about life gems?' Is there a vendor who will always have life gems in stock? Ask Question 5. This game is stupidly fun but also stupidly hard. Having only one Estus Flask is really killing me here. I keep burning through all the life gems I have and then die and since I don't get them back this game just gets harder and harder. Will I have Dark Souls 2.

Ben Griffin knows his Dark Souls 2. His veins don’t so much course with blood as Rouge Water, and his skeleton consists entirely of Homeward Bones. He sees the world through Cracked Red Eye Orbs. He feels it in his Soul Vessel and he processes it in his Petrified Lump. Who better in all of Drangleic, then, to guide you through its perilous first 10 hours? If you want fewer reminders that ‘YOU DIED’, read on for 14 tips, tricks and secrets worth their weight in Gold Pine Resin.

There are some things you should not do in Dark Souls 2. The extraordinary freedom offered by the game carries with it a potentially awesome price. Making bad decisions carries consequences, some of which can resonate through the course of your entire game.

IGN collected seventeen of the worst mistakes you can make in Dark Souls 2, based on the painful experience of our Guides Team. Let our mistaken experience be your gain! Read on!

1. Don't Kill The Emerald Herald[edit]

You can kill almost any NPC in Dark Souls, and that includes your allies. The Emerald Herald in Majula is one of your staunchest supporters, but if you really want to you can butcher her. Should you manage to slay her, you're in quite a bind, as the Herald is your one and only means of Leveling Up your character and upgrading your Estus Flask.

Hp deskjet 1515 installation. While it's technically possible to raise the Herald by expending Souls at her Grave, do yourself a favor and just start over.

2. Don't Kill the Old Women at the Beginning of the Game[edit]

Though two of the old women in Things Betwixt drop Human Effigies when killed, eliminating them also eliminates your option to Respec.

Also, killing little old ladies is just mean.

3. Come To Think of It, Don't Attack Friendly NPCs at All[edit]

Why tick off NPCs? The rewards are rarely worth it, and they stay hostile to you once aroused. The only way to change their aggression toward you is to bribe Cromwell.

4. Don't Waste Human Effigies[edit]

Human Effigies are a scarce commodity, especially in the early game. Don't allow yourself the luxury of using them except when its absolutely necessary. Use a Ring of Binding instead. Or better yet, make use of yourRing of Life Protection and your Ring of Soul Protection to nullify the effects of death.

Early in the game, farm Dogs in the Lost Bastille for extra Effigies if you run short.

5. Don't Turn Down the Sound[edit]

Several of the traps in Dark Souls give sound cues just before springing. That half-second sound of gears moving or something snapping is often the difference between life and death.

6. Don't Rush Up to the Red Crystal Lizard[edit]

Every now and then you'll encounter a Blue Crystal Lizard. If you move quickly enough, these Lizards are a great source of item drops. Their red cousins, however, are not so accommodating. When you run up to attack them, they explode like a bomb. How rude.

7. Don't Use a Bonfire Ascetic Until You're Ready[edit]

Bonfire Ascetics can be quite useful, upgrading the difficulty of an area and allowing you to farm souls for better items and equipment. However, the effects of Bonfire Ascetics are permanent and irreversible, extending even beyond New Game+.

Any zone you infect with an Ascetic will always and forever remain difficult, and you'll not ever be able to change it.

8. Don't Rush Through Doors[edit]

For the love of all that is holy, don't just run through any door you've just opened. Terrible, horrible, awful things may await.

9. Don't Join the Company of Champions[edit]

Unless you're a crazy person or a Dark Souls expert, don't kneel at the Victors Shrine in Majula and join the Covenant of the Company of Champions. It turns on Dark Souls 2's hard mode. Yes, Dark Souls 2 has a hard mode.

If for some reason you do end up stuck in this Covenant, speak with The Cat in Majula to escape.

10. Don't Let Your Equipment Break[edit]

That little red bar under each item on your HUD is really, really important. It shows how close each item you've equipped is to reaching its breaking point. Resting at a Bonfire restores dented Weapon durability for no cost, but if an item fully breaks you'll have to pay to fix it. Carry enough Weapons to have a backup plan in case your preferred gear is in danger of breaking. Also, switch to smaller stabbing or ranged weapons in tight spaces. Banging blades against walls does a lot to weaken them.

11. Don't Get Careless On the Path to Retrieval[edit]

Retrieval of lost Souls is a one-opportunity prospect. There is little more frustrating than dying in a stupid way on your path to a Retrieval. Stay away from cliffs, avoid traps, and take enemies slowly and safely, placing yourself in as little danger as possible. Ignore exploration opportunities, ignore new discoveries..there's plenty of time for that later. Just get to those Souls!

12. Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover[edit]

Huge giant blue scorpion-men are not necessarily your enemies. The first time you see one, don't attack! You may gain a powerful ally if you talk to Tark in the Shaded Woods. You'll need a Ring of Whispers to understand him.

13. Don't Attack Vendrick Without Giant Souls in Hand[edit]

King Vendrick's toughness is proportionally affected by the number of Giant Souls you are carrying. The fewer you have, the tougher he is. Don't engage him without several in hand.

14. Don't Carry Light into the Undead Crypt[edit]

The Wardens aren't just warning you for fun. They'll attack if you bring light into the tombs. Plus, it's just plain rude.

15. Don't Release Navlaan While You're Hollowed[edit]

Navlaan is an NPC locked in a cell in Aldias Keep. If you free him from his cell while human, he can be a great asset to you. If, however, you open the door while Hollowed, he becomes obsessed with killing you and attacks you as an invader.

16. Don't Fight Mytha Without Burning the Windmill[edit]

For the love of all that is holy, don't even attempt to fight Baneful Queen Mytha without burning down the nearby windmill with a Torch. Just don't do it.

17. Don't Waste Your Boss Souls[edit]

Souls acquired from Bosses are precious commodities. You may want to cash them in to Level Up, Reinforce your arsenal, or buy mundane gear, but you should also consider saving them for Boss Weapons. Two characters in the game allow you to trade these Souls for powerful advanced items and magic.

18. Don't Break Treasure Chests[edit]

Don't open treasure chests with your sword! The damage destroys any treasure inside, rendering it Rubbish.

19. Make Sure Treasure Chests ARE Treasure Chests[edit]

Some chests are chests, and others are lethal Mimics which will eat your face the moment they get a chance. Give a chests a single light tap before opening, just to check.

20. Remember That Lockstones Aren't Always Good[edit]

Pharros Lockstones are helpful items that open new paths and reveal new treasures..usually. But they don't always help you. be ready to leap away in case they decide to spray acid on you instead.

21. Don't Attack the Ancient Dragon[edit]

He's friendly. Don't shoot him. Otherwise he gets mad.
