My 8 year old sister currently has an '07 Hardrock Sport 24, which comes with an RST Gilla Plus T7 Fork with 100mm travel. She only weighs 28kg, and I put a zip tie around her stantion today to see how much travel she was really using. Turns out she is only using 50mm of travel even with some small 30cm jumps.
She is a really aggressive rider and she wants to go to bigger and bigger jumps. I want her suspension to be a little softer though because even I can't bottom it out off my 70cm jump to flat with the preload on the softest setting.
What can I do to make it softer? I don't thing sprins are readily available, but will changing the oil or something help?

Hey dude, I got the same problem with your little sister. My fork is a RST Gila RL. The spring is so hard that everytime I jump off even from one-step height, my wrist would be shocked painfully. I tried to set the preload to '-' but it didn't work at all..
I think you'd better change that fork. Maybe the CAPA series would be better than Gilas. Or that fork may harm your sister's wrist.

Yeah off my 70cm jump to flat I tried this morning it would really hurt my wrists and I don't want that to happen to my sister. I was thinking of maybe a Rock Shox Revelation Dual Air or a Pike, something with 130mm travel and an air fork so I can adjust it exactly for her weight. She needs the extra travel too..
But in the meanwhile, are there any cheap fixes to making the RST softer? Just something to do until we can get her the new fork?

hay dudes i have the RSTs to but what i do and with all forks not just mine is before jumping and in the middle of jumps is to just push your forks in and out so they keep warm and work softer because when forks get cold or unused they go stiff so just gep pumping your forks should do the job if not go for some new fors that are air filled forks so you can change the amount of presure in your forks
hope that helps

I tried to push it in and out for many times. But it doesn't work at all..Poor fork.
Especially in winter..the fork will totally become a rigid fork.it's really annoying.
You can also dismantle the fork and change a softer spring..but it seems to be too complicated..

Do RST even make softer springs for their Gila forks? If so, where could I get them?
Will cyling the fork to get it warm just work to make if softer for that ride, or will it permenantly wear out the spring to make it softer every time?

Try turning the preload the other way, chances ae the adjustment wont work very well on this fork but if it does it could be the preload damping.
In which case turning the preload down would be stiffening the fork.

I tried turning the preload knobs the other way, and that made it much stiffer, to the point of lockout.

you might be able to change the springs, check with the shop you got it at

I've seen some shops have custom-made springs in my country. But I think that would be a waste of time to change it..
Much easier to buy a new and nicer one. Haha
